"I started this book expecting a thriller. Like a thriller, it is fast-paced and I didn’t want to put it down. But other than that it is mostly a family drama. I was so happy to be mis-informed! The drama was so real, so honest and believable. The relational complications were nuanced and explored with grace and understanding. I was so happy with what the author developed between the lead women - it was really lovely."

It's definitely hard to categorize, because it's not really YA but it's not just a straight adult thriller either. It's too gritty and rough to be middle grade, but the main characters are basically middle grade age.
I wouldn't recommend it for kids, we'll just say that."

The Likeness (Dublin Murder Squad #2)

"I just cannot believe I read this directly after The Secret History (SH). I had no idea that the basic story and themes are EXACTLY THE SAME. Blows my mind. There's no way that Tana French was not inspired by Donna Tartt's novel... it feels very, very weird.
That being said, I liked it way more. It was engaging and atmospheric. The characters were deeply flawed, but not despicable as in the SH. I understood and rooted for them still. There was true love among them. Cassie's journey so great to watch as well.
This was so well-done - characters and plot were fantastic!"

"This is a long, complicated mystery with fantastic characters. The setting was so different than any other I've read which was fun. Definitely makes me want to visit a Spanish vineyard on a river!
And the mystery.. I just had NO idea what was going on. There were layers on layers. Phew.
It would've been 5 stars if not for (1) it got pretty dark towards the end and (2) it dragged a bit. It's also almost 500 pages so goodness, it's a commitment. I'd say it's a worthwhile commitment but there are content/trigger warnings a'pleanty!"

"I loved this from the very beginning. It gripped me. I felt completely connected to the narrator and was rooting for her to the very end. I think she made (and makes) poor choices but I feel like I understand why.

Also people keep referring to this as a dark comedy filled with wit and satire... I got NONE of that. I didn’t think there was a stitch of humor in there. It makes me feel so stupid. The entire book was so serious to me. Maybe it was the audio format that was tripping me up. Ah well. I still loved it!"

"So. Good. At first, I was concerned because it seemed really similar to Gone Girl, but the similarities fade away after the very beginning of the book. This story takes you on a journey about human nature and shows what we are capable of under the most trying of circumstances. Unlike Gone Girl, it explores characters who have flaws, but ultimately love each other and are trying their best to deal with tragedy. It was a redemptive, though sad story. I definitely had to keep more of an emotional distance from it than I usually do with books, since the story is about the abduction of a child and what his mother goes through as a result. It was so well-written; I will definitely look out for more from this author."
