"From the very beginning, I was completely endeared to the narrator. I rooted for him so much the whole book - I loved the way he thought through things and undertook personal growth so methodically. My heart broke for him, wanted to hug him and encourage him at so many points along the way.

Although this book won't change my life, the experience of it was so incredibly heart-warming and fun that it's an easy 5-stars. It's also lead to some interesting discussions on Asperger's and what it means to be "in love" - which have been very edifying!"

"I expected this to be good, but wow. I devoured this - I could NOT put it down. Lucy is so honest in all of her books, but this one is especially tender and vulnerable. It's mostly a memoir but it also has a good bit of research about fertility and pregnancy and the history around the treatment of women's bodies. I learned a lot - and it wasn't all great. The personal side of it is what sets this book apart as great.

I cried through the end. Of a comic book. Yup.
This art form is so amazing. I can't believe it's taken me so long to discover them. More graphic novels, please!"

"This was the funniest book I have read since The Princess Bride.
I'm not sure I need to add any more to this review...

But just in case: It's essential British-ness was delightful. I was laughing out loud regularly. It's so deeply clever.

One thing that was hard: listing to the audio, it was hard to keep track of the perspective changes. There are so so many perspectives, which would have been fine in print, but in audio I struggled. The reader did a great job doing different accents which made the dialogue scenes (sometime with like a dozen characters) manageable."

"This book was perfect until the very end. There was one detail that I would have left out - it was too kitschy. But I still give it 5 stars for the reading experience and for having such a well-crafted story. So many interesting twists and secrets - I was guessing until the end. One facet that I didn't appreciate that's also been in some of her other books is the way she manipulates your emotions to be absolutely fine with infidelity. It's not something that's beautiful and tragic - it's never good in any way.

Overall, fantastic book that I'm sure I'll read again and recommend to all!"

"I promised myself on New Years that I would finish this book before I read any more fiction. Whew, it was a slog! Not because it's uninteresting or slow, I just do NOT like reading nonfiction. It's like work.

That being said, this book is fantastic- I'd say a must-read for parents or soon-to-be-parents. I have an 18 month old and I feel so much liberation and purpose after reading this. I have so often been confused and exasperated and truly exhausted in my parenting. This book shows you how to cut through the noise and focus on the principles and parenting world-view of Scripture. I honestly think I've been making parenting too hard. I appreciate that the book has not just big-picture ideas but TONS of practical, every day wisdom.

I only give 4 stars because I had so much trouble getting through it. Again, not the fault of the content."

"This was a complex and modern fairy tale, with all of the magic and wonder and none of the young adult drama that "modern fairy tale" usually includes. It dealt with real, adult issues in a multi-faceted, thoughtful way. I absolutely loved the combination of fairy tale elements and the exploration of grief and the forms it takes. Somehow the magic makes the delivery of the message even more potent."

"I did not connect with protagonist for a while into the book, so it took me some time to get into it. But once I did I could not be stopped! There is a central conflict/mystery in the book and towards the end I found myself thinking, "These characters and the stories of their relationships growing and changing are so good, I don't really care if the mystery gets resolved." 👏 The romantic scenes had 0% cheese and 100% sweetness, it was the best. I loved watching the protagonist grow in her feelings of motherhood and her vision / calling for her own life. It was inspiring!

The idea of a Second South was a very helpful illustration. It's one I'll have to chew on for a while."

"Another fantastic middle grade book! This would be a great companion read for A Wrinkle in Time since it is discussed at length and creates a sort of theme/framework for the story. (minor clues that might lead to a spoiler ahead) I adore science fiction like this, where the story is 98% realistic with just that slight hint of something special. It's subtle and so fun. The book also explores different middle-school relationships: family, friends, crushes. I found the dialog and thoughts of the narrator to be real and relatable. I love the way middle grade books can explore so well feelings of confusion and vulnerability that don't always leave us after those pre-teen years are over.

This is a super quick, super enjoyable read that I recommend whole-heartedly to everyone!"

"This book is a work of art, truly. A work of art that completely wrecked me multiple times. It's both a beautiful and heart-breaking read. From beginning to end the writing is poetic and thoughtful.

The way the author tells the stories (there are so many stories) is like he's painting a painting starting in the middle and moving outward in a spiral until the picture makes sense. Left to right in the painting is past to future. I've rarely seen the use of third person omniscient POV used so skillfully and effectively.

It goes in the same category of books for me as The Kite Runner. Will I recommend it? Absolutely, emphatically. Will I read it again? I don't think I can handle it a second time."

Beartown (Beartown, #1)

"I find it hard to express my feelings about this book. My heart! This novel engrossed me - engaged all of my emotions, my senses, my imagination. It made me think about myself and our world - about the ordinary people I see every day - differently.

I've heard Backman described as the Dickens of our time. I absolutely get it after reading this book. What I loved the most was also the most Dickens-esque element of the book: the vast array of richly developed characters. There are so many! And none of them are minor. Backman uses his time so well giving you a brief, but vital glimpse into each character's life, what shapes their perspective. He weaves them all together so beautifully - no one is a stock character! Everyone is part of the rich tapestry that makes up this small town.

Beartown is a character in itself, which I love! This town could be any sports-obsessed, economically depressed town in any part of the world. I am not a sports person, but I could absolutely get in the mindset of the people and this thing that unites them.

A lot of the content was very difficult to read, and the results were upsetting. I finished the book feeling a deep sense of injustice and anger, but also hope. The sacrifice, love and commitment that so many people in the community displayed paint a picture of a different, better world than the one we live in today."

"Still reeling a bit from this one. It started out so light-hearted and hilarious - the tone reminded me so much of P.G. Wodehouse, which I LOVE. There's a moment when all of that changes. The tone of the book, along with the internal journey of the characters, gets more and more serious. As I can imagine with the war, it's rather a jarring change, but it feels real and true.

The writing is so, so good. It checked my boxes of heart and humor, then checked my additional box of "teaches me history without me noticing".

I didn't love the ending, but again, it felt real. It's not neat and tidy, but it speaks to the reality of the time and the progression of the characters."

"I wish I could give more stars! I devoured this book and was sad when it ended. It was so completely wonderful- I loved the setting, the garden and cooking themes, the growing relationships, and the MAGIC! Magical realism is a genre I am coming to really adore - it's just enough magic to make the novel sort of hazy and romantic. Everything about this novel was romantic, in the literal and the classical sense. I related to the main character's introversion and creativity expressed through food - watching her open up and grow as a sister, friend, and love interest was a joy. And the ensemble of characters in the family and the town made me think of Stars Hollow, so that was a win. Just read this book!!"

"This book was wonderful.
Just enough gothic, just enough fairy tale, just enough adult/complex relationships and struggle - this will be a favorite. I love the language, sense of place, and story-telling themes.

Now we need a movie, please and thank you."

"Second time through this one and it held up! I love that. The first time I read it was probably 7th or 8th grade, so I wasn't sure what to expect. This author is actually really good at telling historical stories in an interesting and informative way - which is what I enjoy about historical fiction. This is a story about the struggles of Bible translators (and readers) during the time of Henry VIII. Overall it was well-written and didn't simplify complex issues. I walk away with a greater appreciation of my religious freedoms and gratitude for the sacrifices of others that have given me these freedoms. The ending was a little trite, but the rest of the book was great."

"My reaction to this book is summed up in a jaw drop. That's how I felt pretty much the last third of the book, like my jaw was on the floor. This story is beautiful and sweeping and heartbreaking and so much to process! It will leave you changed. This book reminds me of The Invention of Wings - not in content, but in the way I know I will be thinking about it for years to come.

I highly recommend the audio version."

"The book was SO GOOD. I love historical fiction fantasy - it's so fun to get both! This was definitely "fantasy lite". The emphasis was on the characters and themes and not the world-building. Which is what I prefer in fantasy.

The two heroines of the story were so inspiring! I loved them like I love Anne of Green Gables, Hermione and Christy."

"I would've given this book 3 stars up until the last third. It really got good and left me in tears in the end. It was worth the read - even though it took more effort for me since I generally dislike books in a modern setting."
