"I give this book 4 stars for purely the enjoyment of reading it – it was a lot of fun! For the overall concept I would give it a 3. It was confusing and not well explained. But overall it was so fun that I was along for the ride the entire way. It's a really neat juxtaposition of old and new – books and technology – Google and old libraries. That was right up my alley!"

"I feel like maybe I should withhold comment until I’ve read the whole series.. In isolation I liked the book but did not love it. The world is hard and ugly but there were moments of goodness and beauty to hold onto. Probably not enough of those for my taste though.

It’s incredibly creative but sometimes hard to follow."

"Another fantastic middle grade book! This would be a great companion read for A Wrinkle in Time since it is discussed at length and creates a sort of theme/framework for the story. (minor clues that might lead to a spoiler ahead) I adore science fiction like this, where the story is 98% realistic with just that slight hint of something special. It's subtle and so fun. The book also explores different middle-school relationships: family, friends, crushes. I found the dialog and thoughts of the narrator to be real and relatable. I love the way middle grade books can explore so well feelings of confusion and vulnerability that don't always leave us after those pre-teen years are over.

This is a super quick, super enjoyable read that I recommend whole-heartedly to everyone!"

"A standing ovation for this one!! It was charming, funny and overall just great fun. I almost marked it down a star because I felt a bit lost in the weeds at times but I think it was simply a difficulty of listening to audio rather than reading. Now the question is will I break my personal ban of anime to watch the Disney version of this? Hmmmm"

"What a great read! I definitely want to see the play if it ever comes to the US - I enjoyed reading the book, but I think as a play it would be 1000x better. To those people that didn't like it, I'd say don't compare it to Harry Potter. It's apples and oranges. This play has to be appreciated in its own right - it is its own thing. It was sad and sweet - hit a lot of familiar Rowling themes and tied things up neatly. It is action-packed for a play and doesn't take as much time to develop characters as it would have as a novel. But that's okay!"

"This was an exciting and interesting read, although no where near the level of plot and character development as A Song of Ice and Fire (which was not a surprise considering it's a graphic novel). The story is simple, but has some fun twists and turns - exploring themes of honor and loyalty, just like ASOIAF. Although it was a bit gross at points, I flew through it and really enjoyed getting more of a visual sense for Westeros (since I've never seen the show, I appreciated this)."

"This story had all the elements to be something I'd really like. And I did enjoy a good bit of it. For me, the "YA-ness" kind of ruined it. It took me out of the setting (the dialog felt too modern) and broke the atmosphere.

Overall though, it's an enjoyable, interesting mystery with some good character relationships."

This book had all of the good things about the first book: warm family life, great setting, and a quirky cast of characters. Where this fell behind is that it was just TOO complicated. Too many characters, too many side stories. It was all just too much.

My complaints may be a result of listening to the audio rather than reading it."

The main character was fantastic: sweet and brave and considerate and clever, but also uncertain and flawed. Although there were some predictable twists, most of the mysteries were entirely unique and so fun. The setting was really atmospheric and different. Overall, the book was a great mix of adventure and sentiment and reflection."

"It was very well-written and I loved the narration by a child. It was really neat to be introduced to new fantastical experiences from his perspective - he just never questioned anything that was happening. Made me remember my own imaginative childhood! But I only give four stars because the whole fantasy concept was a little weak - it just didn't intrigue me that much. I loved the characters - their weaknesses and strengths were well fleshed out and relatable."

"Such a rich and exciting ending to a fantastic trilogy. I wholeheartedly recommend this to those who like books about fantasy or politics or history or race and religion issues.

The setting and the magic was so vivid. I felt completely immersed. The villains were complex and the heroes were flawed. This story is honest and the ending is satisfying."

"This was fun and engrossing, but I had to drop it down a star for just being too dang confusing. There were entirely too many characters and they all looked alike. I could NOT keep them straight - and all of the history. Too much for the graphic form."

"This was the funniest book I have read since The Princess Bride.
I'm not sure I need to add any more to this review...

But just in case: It's essential British-ness was delightful. I was laughing out loud regularly. It's so deeply clever.

One thing that was hard: listing to the audio, it was hard to keep track of the perspective changes. There are so so many perspectives, which would have been fine in print, but in audio I struggled. The reader did a great job doing different accents which made the dialogue scenes (sometime with like a dozen characters) manageable."

"Definitely my favorite Neil Gaiman book so far! It was exciting and creepy, sad and sweet. It was so incredibly imaginative! I think Gaiman weaves humor and pathos so well into interesting story lines. And the protagonist was so charming!"

"The book was SO GOOD. I love historical fiction fantasy - it's so fun to get both! This was definitely "fantasy lite". The emphasis was on the characters and themes and not the world-building. Which is what I prefer in fantasy.

The two heroines of the story were so inspiring! I loved them like I love Anne of Green Gables, Hermione and Christy."
