"This is a long, complicated mystery with fantastic characters. The setting was so different than any other I've read which was fun. Definitely makes me want to visit a Spanish vineyard on a river!

And the mystery.. I just had NO idea what was going on. There were layers on layers. Phew.

It would've been 5 stars if not for (1) it got pretty dark towards the end and (2) it dragged a bit. It's also almost 500 pages so goodness, it's a commitment. I'd say it's a worthwhile commitment but there are content/trigger warnings a'pleanty!"

"I didn't totally connect with the protagonist, but I respected her and rooted for her from beginning to end. I loved the way the author immerses you in the native culture of Sault Sainte Marie - I learned so much. I feel like my perspective and understanding has grown. It's a beautifully crafted novel, which I would categorize in religious fiction, not fantasy. Although the elements of that are super minor. "

But another cozy, wonderful Gamache story. I loved every minute. Certain parts were so moving I had to pause, take a moment to get it together. All from a mystery novel! What Penny does with these books is really special."

"I absolutely understand why people call this comfort reading. It's a murder mystery filled with beautiful, scenic imagery and endearing, complex characters. It's not often that I find a mystery that feels literary in the way it treats character development and relationships.

Although certainly not plot-driven, I'd call this a cozy and engaging read."

I connected with this novel a lot more than the first in the series. I'm finally starting to understand what all the fuss is about! "

"This story had all the elements to be something I'd really like. And I did enjoy a good bit of it. For me, the "YA-ness" kind of ruined it. It took me out of the setting (the dialog felt too modern) and broke the atmosphere.

Overall though, it's an enjoyable, interesting mystery with some good character relationships."

"Tough to listen to - probably a bit over the line for what I usually read. It was very well written though. The family relationships, the way they break apart and come together, make it a worthwhile read. There were some elements that were a little too fantastical for me – it just seemed out of the tone of the rest of her novel. Also kind of creepy and weird."

"4.5

Hard to read at times, but man, so so good! I could’ve done with less violence and one of the twists at the end was just a little too much, otherwise it would’ve been 5 stars from me.

Oh, also, the second half involves first-person perspective from an abuser and it was disturbing. No thank you, did not like that. (But also, it was a great book, so I'm confused)"

"This book was perfect until the very end. There was one detail that I would have left out - it was too kitschy. But I still give it 5 stars for the reading experience and for having such a well-crafted story. So many interesting twists and secrets - I was guessing until the end. One facet that I didn't appreciate that's also been in some of her other books is the way she manipulates your emotions to be absolutely fine with infidelity. It's not something that's beautiful and tragic - it's never good in any way.

Overall, fantastic book that I'm sure I'll read again and recommend to all!"

"I just cannot believe I read this directly after The Secret History (SH). I had no idea that the basic story and themes are EXACTLY THE SAME. Blows my mind. There's no way that Tana French was not inspired by Donna Tartt's novel... it feels very, very weird.

That being said, I liked it way more. It was engaging and atmospheric. The characters were deeply flawed, but not despicable as in the SH. I understood and rooted for them still. There was true love among them. Cassie's journey so great to watch as well.

This was so well-done - characters and plot were fantastic!"

"I don't know why, but I had this book really built up in my mind, and it was somewhat of a let-down after that. What I enjoyed: it had much more atmosphere than most Christie novels. The action happened throughout the novel instead of just at the beginning. I was really freaked out throughout (which is a good thing). Certain elements of the story (that involved the deaths of children in the past - not a spoiler, I promise) I had to separate from emotionally. For obvious reasons. That took me out of the story somewhat.

Also, I was able to guess the ending based on some fairly clear clues. I was high-fiving myself over that one! Although it was rather disappointing to not be surprised.

"So. Good. At first, I was concerned because it seemed really similar to Gone Girl, but the similarities fade away after the very beginning of the book. This story takes you on a journey about human nature and shows what we are capable of under the most trying of circumstances. Unlike Gone Girl, it explores characters who have flaws, but ultimately love each other and are trying their best to deal with tragedy. It was a redemptive, though sad story. I definitely had to keep more of an emotional distance from it than I usually do with books, since the story is about the abduction of a child and what his mother goes through as a result. It was so well-written; I will definitely look out for more from this author."

"3 stars because it kept me interested till the end - I wanted to know the whole story. Otherwise, I didn’t really like any of the characters - which isn’t a requirement, but there were so many I couldn’t really go deep with any one. I guess I just don’t understand the author’s point. What was he trying to do here?"

"The second book in a series with a great protagonist. Veronica is so much fun and this book was a breeze to get through. Very engaging and interesting, but not at all believable. I found the sexual discussions just gratuitous and dumb - there for shock value only. And there was just so much of it! Here's to hoping Book 3 gets better - I'm holding out for Veronica's sake!"

"4.5

I came the realization about halfway through this book that this is a series I will read again. Which gave me immense relief because at times I find the writing confusing which is the ONLY criticism I have of this series.

I will read these books again, along with Anne of Green Gables and Narnia and Harry Potter.

Just like in Avonlea, Penny has created a place you want to move to. You want to sit around the fire with these people, eat their food and laugh with them. The magic of these stories is that the mystery is almost secondary to the relationships. The breakthrough with Armand and Beauvoir had me in tears."

"This story has everything that makes a high-quality thriller: fantastic setting, a twisty plot that keeps you guessing, ATMOSPHERE out my ears, and complicated relationships that explore tough and relatable issues. Just as in The Dry, the location was a character itself. Fantastic!"
