"Wow. This book is so subtle and quiet in its tragedy that the heartbreak of it takes you by surprise. It really is beautifully crafted - so British in its description of deeply felt emotion."

"Wow, this 5 star was ... unexpected. It starts off really simple. I was not impressed with the initial setup of characters and the time travel theme. But, boy, does Butler ratchet up the tension and complexity! I ended completely overwhelmed. There's so so much to consider and discuss. She does not back down from any difficult ideas or grey areas. She faces them head on, showing human brokenness and defending dignity."

"I can tell this book is good literature, but I didn’t love it. I get frustrated when I feel like there’s something I am supposed to understand that is just beyond my reach. I wish I could discuss this in a book club!

The incredible writing probably would’ve boosted it to a 4 star for me if not for the grittiness and rawness. The level of crassness kind of took me out of the story... but I could see it maybe accomplishing another purpose of the author."

"A fascinating and engrossing story based on the author’s research into her own lineage. The book is filled with pictures and other primary sources documents that completely transported me. I studied each picture, so interested in these real people and their similarities and their dreams and their loves.

This book is a novel but is clearly formed around a framework of real events. The women in this family!! Goodness. Flawed, but so strong.

One note: it is very interesting to read this book so soon after reading The Vanishing Half. Both deal with colorism and make complimentary reads. TVH kind of picks up where this book left off time-wise. I found the town in TVH hard to believe- but after reading this real story, it’s easier to understand."

"I don't know why, but I had this book really built up in my mind, and it was somewhat of a let-down after that. What I enjoyed: it had much more atmosphere than most Christie novels. The action happened throughout the novel instead of just at the beginning. I was really freaked out throughout (which is a good thing). Certain elements of the story (that involved the deaths of children in the past - not a spoiler, I promise) I had to separate from emotionally. For obvious reasons. That took me out of the story somewhat.

Also, I was able to guess the ending based on some fairly clear clues. I was high-fiving myself over that one! Although it was rather disappointing to not be surprised.

"I was completely shocked by how much I LOVED this book. I've known about the basic plot since it came out and I've seen the movie, so I've had it in the category of books I "probably won't like." (Even though I did really enjoy the movie)

This is nothing like I expected. There's certainly philosophy, but it's not dry. There's essays on the author's opinions, but the plot never drags. And it's just so dang funny!

Read this so we can talk about it!"

"I was disappointed here. I had high hopes of an interesting psychological mystery. I suppose the author accomplished what she set out to do, which is chronicle the unraveling of all the people surrounding a tragic event. I just felt like it was all... pointless? There was nothing to make it all worth it as a reader - no resolution or interesting development at the end.

I give it 3 stars for the amount of creepy atmosphere and the feel of the Australian countryside. Both of which I loved."

"I loved this up to the end. I think I'm probably missing some of the greater points/themes/symbolism. I had to read a synopsis and I still don't totally get it. Just wish I had a lit class or a good book club to discuss this with. Again my inability to see the forest for the trees is hindering my enjoyment of good books. "

"This was a truly "enchanting" and delightful read, although slow at times.

My main problems with the book revolved around the way the relationships resolved – which is a pretty big deal since that’s what the whole book builds towards. I feel able to forgive that, however, due to the period in which it was written and the fact that everything else was so wonderful.

The growing relationships between the women. The blossoming of each individual. The incredible setting! The humor! This book checked a lot of things on my love list.
