"This is a long, complicated mystery with fantastic characters. The setting was so different than any other I've read which was fun. Definitely makes me want to visit a Spanish vineyard on a river!

And the mystery.. I just had NO idea what was going on. There were layers on layers. Phew.

It would've been 5 stars if not for (1) it got pretty dark towards the end and (2) it dragged a bit. It's also almost 500 pages so goodness, it's a commitment. I'd say it's a worthwhile commitment but there are content/trigger warnings a'pleanty!"

"This story has everything that makes a high-quality thriller: fantastic setting, a twisty plot that keeps you guessing, ATMOSPHERE out my ears, and complicated relationships that explore tough and relatable issues. Just as in The Dry, the location was a character itself. Fantastic!"

Year Published: 2008

"I just cannot believe I read this directly after The Secret History (SH). I had no idea that the basic story and themes are EXACTLY THE SAME. Blows my mind. There's no way that Tana French was not inspired by Donna Tartt's novel... it feels very, very weird.

That being said, I liked it way more. It was engaging and atmospheric. The characters were deeply flawed, but not despicable as in the SH. I understood and rooted for them still. There was true love among them. Cassie's journey so great to watch as well.

This was so well-done - characters and plot were fantastic!"

The Chilbury Ladies' Choir

by: Jennifer Ryan
Ave. Rating: 3.95
Pages: 371
Year Published: 2017

"This was a sweet, light story that reads super fast. It feels strange to classify a WWII story as “light” but it felt that way (maybe in comparison to some other novels read recently).

I didn’t love the epistolary/journal style - it seemed awkward and unrealistic. And the “twists” were rather obvious and unsurprising.

I enjoyed the read though. I didn’t want to put it down. The characters were charming with good development. "

"4.5

This was just the medicine I needed for a hard time. It was full of wonderful characters, a strong sense of place and a great story. It was cozy through and through. Over 700 pages read like 200.

Towards the end it took a sadder turn than I was expecting, but still great!"

"This was a truly "enchanting" and delightful read, although slow at times.

My main problems with the book revolved around the way the relationships resolved – which is a pretty big deal since that’s what the whole book builds towards. I feel able to forgive that, however, due to the period in which it was written and the fact that everything else was so wonderful.

The growing relationships between the women. The blossoming of each individual. The incredible setting! The humor! This book checked a lot of things on my love list.

"I loved the circus setting and growth of the relationship between the two lead women. It definitely felt over-dramatic at moments, but who am I to judge? It was a dramatic time.

Also, why "The Orphan's Tale"? Is the orphan Theo? It's not his story at all. "
