"Definitely very creepy. I read for a bit before realizing the Netflix series was based on this. But as so often happens with horror, there was just no point to it all. I needed something to elevate it."

"This book had me hooked from the start. Its language was elegant and often funny – while preserving an atmosphere of mystery and foreboding. I was expecting a dull, slow read considering it's a Victorian novel. But I flew through it! "

"Tough to listen to - probably a bit over the line for what I usually read. It was very well written though. The family relationships, the way they break apart and come together, make it a worthwhile read. There were some elements that were a little too fantastical for me – it just seemed out of the tone of the rest of her novel. Also kind of creepy and weird."

"I really loved parts of this, but in the end I found it unsatisfying. I didn't need it to be sewn up neatly, but I was hoping for something more. Something to point to a reason or some kind of explanation.

The writing was great though - characters, dialogue and sense of place. It kept me chilled."

"It was very well-written and I loved the narration by a child. It was really neat to be introduced to new fantastical experiences from his perspective - he just never questioned anything that was happening. Made me remember my own imaginative childhood! But I only give four stars because the whole fantasy concept was a little weak - it just didn't intrigue me that much. I loved the characters - their weaknesses and strengths were well fleshed out and relatable."

"I would not want my child to read this. I just finished The Shining a few weeks ago and this book gave me a way more unsettled/creepy/icky feeling than that one. Very dark – without a plot good enough to make me OK with it."

"This was a fun listening experience. I enjoyed the setting (place AND time) and the characters. I liked the oral storytelling method - I feel like the author did it really well. I was never confused. The horror aspects of it were subtle, more creepy than terrifying.

As with other horror stories I've read, I wish they had explained more. I don't totally understand what happened, but I suppose I'm okay with that."
